PROGRAM SUMMARY
The United Way of Marathon County initiated discussion among community residents regarding how our community could best respond to the growing needs of low income families.
Based on model programs from other communities and focus group feedback, Project Step Up was developed by the Financial Stability Coalition. It was launched in January 2009 to promote self-sufficiency, strengthen families, and reduce isolation through mentoring and ongoing support. The program empowers participants to work with project staff and volunteers to set goals, and link to other community resources.
Families enrolled in the program will accomplish their goals toward self-sufficiency by:
- Developing a relationship with volunteers to help them improve problem-solving skills, complete their goals and help identify and build upon existing strengths.
- Connecting to community resources which address their varied service needs
- Attending group meetings to learn new skills in a group setting, share their experiences and build relationships with other families.
Who benefits:
- Low Income Workers - in the development of effective financial strategies.
- Employers - by creating a stronger, more crisis resistant workforce.
- Communities - by the increased financial stability of residents.
